ADVENT reflections

Before Jesus’ birth, the angels appeared to some shepherds on the hillside outside Bethlehem.  They came announcing good news of peace and renewal – tidings of comfort and joy.

We asked 25 people to prepare a meditation for us to read and listen to every day through Advent. We are delighted to share their work with you.

God bless you as you read, listen and pray.

Day 3: Rev 22: 6 – 9, 12 – 13

The angel said to me, ‘These words are trustworthy and true. The Lord, the God who inspires the prophets, sent his angel to show his servants the things that must soon take place.’

‘Look, I am coming soon! Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy written in this scroll.’

I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had been showing them to me. But he said to me, ‘Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your fellow prophets and with all who keep the words of this scroll. Worship God!’

12 ‘Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

When I think about my faith, I mainly focus just on Christ’s death and resurrection; and yet, what this passage powerfully reminds us is that there’s more!   And verses 6 & 7 have really stood out for me: “These words are faithful and true…. “”Look, I am coming soon! Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy.”  We will meet Jesus again; and it will be perfect but…we are called to keep faithful to Him, to His words.

I love the realisation that the Christians hearing these words 2000 years ago were just like us – real people living their lives, messy at times, doing real work; like us they had fears and doubts; like many of us, they struggled day to day to be faithful in living as a faithful Christian.    And yet, what is Jesus’ first call from Heaven to them and us today – “look I’m coming soon – you will be with me BUT you need to keep faithful to me – persevere – because if you do, you will be soooo blessed.  Friends, this is the motivation and the Hope we have.

We’ve seen so clearly in the last 8 months that nothing is for ever, nothing can be taken for granted.   As in biblical times, life is fragile, temporary – and we are not in control. BUT what is constant and what is true is that we have hope and confidence in a God who tells us time and again,  don’t be afraid – trust me, keep my word, be faithful to me – yes, we may mess up regularly but persevere and we will be blessed here, now and eternally.

And so, in the build-up and chaos that comes with Christmas – this is our call to action; we have a choice to put Him at the centre in how we live day to day.   To let it flow into every part of our lives – the way we speak to each other – particularly those closest to us, or our judgemental comments, our approach to work, money and material possessions.  We are called to daily keep the right perspective – it’s all too easy for our focus & energy in this advent season to get sucked into the  secular side of Christmas – presents, decorations, food,…… – the reality is that these things will be forgotten by mid-January!.  The bottom line is that it’s all about Jesus – because that’s eternal – not just for December.
